About Special Hoops
Special Hoops returns May 2022!
Special Hoops, an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament, provides opportunities for children and adults to compete athletically with the support and guidance of mental health professionals and elite student-athletes. Participants learn game fundamentals, gain confidence, build friendships, and have fun in a safe, inclusive environment.
According to PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, children with disabilities are two to three times more likely to experience bullying than their peers without disabilities. To help prevent, address, and eradicate bullying towards this population, Special Hoops links members of the Greensboro Warriors, an AAU basketball team, with tournament participants. Through a proprietary anti-bullying curriculum, team members learn how to serve as peer mentors to participants, and leverage their status as star athletes to influence their schoolmates to restrain from and/or reduce bullying behavior.
